For example, Incremental Rehearsal (IR; Tucker & Burns, 2016) is a flashcard technique that relies on high repetition of unknown items interspersed among a high percentage of known items and is highly effective in increasing retention of words, letter sounds, and math facts (Burns, Zaslofsky, Kanive, & Parker, 2012).
When IR was viewed through Behavioral Theory, opportunities to respond (OTR) within the intervention were identified as the most important component (Szadokierski & Burns, 2008).
Therefore, IR could be used in various different settings such as computer-based applications (Volpe, Burns, DuBois, & Zaslofsky, 2011), or with modified procedures to teach different stimuli to novel groups (e.g.
, preschoolers; Bunn, Burns, Hoffman, & Newman, 2005), students with severe disabilities (Burns & Kimosh, 2005), or to enhance generalization (Petersen-Brown & Burns, 2011), as long as the IR approach maintains high OTR.
The teacher and school psychologist decided to focus on a word-level intervention, which consisted of determining the reading lessons for the week, finding the unknown words in the reading passages, and preteaching the unknown words each morning using Incremental Rehearsal.
